On Tuesday, the Charles Smith trained General Tufto will break records by having his one hundredth start at just the one racecourse, Southwell.

Owned locally by John Theaker, “The General” as he is known by the Southwell regulars, has become a real racing fans favourite for many years with his regular appearances at the Fibresand venue. He may be eleven years of age now, but he certainly has not lost any of his zest for racing, with 58 wins or placed runs from 187 career starts. He has amassed 16 career wins in his career, with 14 of those coming at Southwell and the other two in East Yorkshire at Beverley Racecourse.

Mark Clayton, Executive Director at Southwell Racecourse said of the horse: “General Tufto has become a cult hero for the racegoers here at Southwell. He has a real strong legion of followers who will back him every time he runs and everyone here at Southwell is very proud to be playing a part in his record breaking achievements”.

He is running in the first race at 12.00 noon on Tuesday afternoon and will face eleven rivals. Joey Haynes will take the ride on the enigmatic son of Fantastic Light, and has won on the horse on his last four wins at the course.

Southwell hosts an eight race card on Tuesday, getting underway at 12.00 noon. It is also the first of the racecourse’s Festive Fixtures. There will also be appearances from Santa, Mistletoe and Chester the reindeer from the Phoenix Children’s Foundation and Christmas Carols before racing from the Southwell Minster Chorale.
